MIRI: The people have been urged to carefully choose a government by having a clear understanding of not betting their trust on an inexperienced government that is not yet proven in its capability of running a nation.
Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud stated this when delivering his address at the Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations’ Chinese New Year dinner held at a local hotel here, on Monday.
“We cannot afford to have a government that does not have the experience to handle our country’s economy or one that cannot run this country, particularly when our country’s and the world’s economies are expected to face many changes and challenges over the next few years,” he said.
He cited as an example of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government’s good and effective management and governance by pointing out its ability to recover from the 1997 Asian economic crisis.
Taib said that the BN government made the right move by not seeking financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and instead, opted to employ other effective methods to rescue the country’s economy and steer it clear from the crisis.
“If not for the BN government’s ability to make the right decision, millions of our people might have lost their jobs as well as their businesses then, a situation that was faced by many of our neighbouring countries,” he pointed out.
The Chief Minister also commented that democracy meant freedom of choice, but it must be harnessed with clear understanding and certainty.
In this regard, he called on the people to continue to support the BN government, led by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, as it had proven itself many times in the past by tackling crises and establishing economic and political stability.
“When there is stability, we can achieve higher accumulation of wealth for the people and attract more foreign investments into our country,” he said, adding that in this modern era, nothing was certain, including the global economic situation.
Taib said Malaysia’s economy was determined more and more by the BN government’s capability in keeping up and expanding the country’s economic growth.
“In the past, when America was the leading economic powerhouse, every time it sneezed, almost every country in the world was affected.
“But now, when America sneezes, thankfully we are no longer affected,” he said in reference to the fragile and volatile global economy and the emergence of Asian economic powerhouses that no longer rely on Western countries to prosper.
Taib also urged local businessmen to consider strengthening their business ties and to concentrate more on their relationship with other fast emerging Asian economic giants like China to create better business opportunities.
Among those present at the dinner were the Head of State, Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin and his wife,Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Hajah Norkiah, Chief Minister’s wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang, Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin, Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing and Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
