Sibuti Regatta to be held in Niah on 20-22 Sept
MIRI: More than 30,000 people are expected to converge at Niah town to witness the Sibuti Regatta on 20-22 September.
Chairman of the organising committee, Boniface Intang Apat said 21 race categories will be contested this year including the open men category for 30 paddlers with the champion to be crowned as ‘Raja Sungai Niah’.
Speaking at the media conference here yesterday morning he said, the Sibuti Regatta was an ad hoc event which had been organised since 1959.
“For the past two years, this event had been organised in Bekenu but for this year Niah had been chosen as the venue for the event. In Bekenu it attracted 30,000 people and we hope that this year it will attract more people,” he said, adding that the organiser is looking forward to the participation from both local and international groups.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Sibuti, Ahmad Lai Bujang hoped that all parties such as government departments, NGOs as well as individuals will give their full cooperation to ensure the success of the event.
“A part from promoting water sports, this event can also foster ties between the various communities under the 1Malaysia concept,” he said, adding that the event would also benefit the local people and gives them the opportunity to do business.
Earlier, Ahmad Lai presented official T-shirts for the media covering the event, witnessed by the committee members.
